An Interview With Transit Forward Philadelphia

I recently, asked the coalition manager of TFP about what is causing SEPTA’s funding crisis. Below are the answers about SEPTA’s current situation.

Do you understand how SEPTA  got to the point where they have to consider 45% service cuts? Can they actually do that because it effects thousands of septa riders.

Over the years, SEPTA has received between one-half and one-third the level of funding compared to peer agencies. This legacy of underinvestment has resulted in an untenable situation. SEPTA faces a $213 million budget deficit starting July 1, 2025. Unfortunately, there is nothing left to cut from the SEPTA budget but service.

Would you agree that the city of philadelphia would not be the same if they go through these drastic service cuts?  Has Septa considered how the bus and train riders feel about this?

I would absolutely agree. The proposed cuts would catastrophically change our region for the worse. It would take away the freedom of Philadelphians to travel to work, school, and destinations in a way that is affordable, reliable, and sustainable. SEPTA estimates that cuts would lead to 76,700 job losses in the Philly region with $6 billion in lost earnings as well as $19.9 Billion in lost property value. Philly can’t afford this and we need to fight back to make sure the state fully invests in public transit.

Do you think there will be a responsible solution to the SEPTA funding crisis at all this year?

Yes, if we fight for it. Our state legislators need to hear your voice. Please contact them using this petition to our state elected officials to stop transit cuts and share your story.  Join us at Save SEPTA events locally here or a rally and lobby day on June 4th with Transit For all PA.

To avoid service cuts and drastic fare increases, the State must approve a budget that would enable SEPTA to maintain service levels. This would position SEPTA and Pennsylvania to welcome visitors from around the globe for the events of 2026 and ensure reliable service for the next five years.
